Canadian Members Continue Capital Cost Allowance Advocacy

On June 4, TRSA and several Canadian members held a follow-up meeting with Sean O’Neill, director of parliamentary affairs/issue management in the Office of the Minister of Finance, continuing advocacy that began during the April 27-28 Canadian Legislative Conference meetings on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

The discussion provided an opportunity to further introduce the industrial laundry sector, highlight its economic footprint in Canada and explain why the industry should be eligible for the Capital Cost Allowance tax provision for manufacturing-related investment. Participating members shared how commercial laundry operations support Canadian jobs, healthcare, hospitality, service providers and other essential sectors, while requiring significant capital investment in facilities, equipment, water systems, energy efficiency and processing technology.

Capital Cost Allowance, or CCA, is Canada’s tax depreciation system that allows businesses to deduct the cost of eligible capital assets over time. For capital-intensive sectors, CCA treatment can significantly affect the timing and economics of facility and equipment investment by allowing companies to recover costs more efficiently.

The meeting was positive and constructive. O’Neill indicated that he would consult with finance officials to determine whether the industry’s requested clarification could be accomplished through a regulatory change or whether a legislative amendment would be required. If legislation is needed, TRSA and Canadian members will continue working to advance the issue as part of the fall budget process.

This engagement builds on TRSA’s broader Canadian advocacy efforts to ensure the industrial laundry sector is recognized as a production-based industry that supports economic growth, supply-chain resilience and continued investment in Canadian facilities.
