TRSA-backed legislation to increase the use of reusable healthcare textiles in Ohio took an important step forward over the past week, as both Senate Bill 344 and House Bill 863 received their first hearings in their respective health committees.

The bills aim to strengthen Ohio’s healthcare supply chain by encouraging greater use of reusable infection-prevention textiles. Under the legislation, certain healthcare facilities would be required to maintain an operating threshold in which at least 50% of infection prevention-textile products are reusable. The proposal reflects growing recognition that reusable PPE can reduce environmental waste, lower costs and provide healthcare facilities with a more resilient supply of essential protective items.

During the hearings, bill sponsors Sen. George Lang and Rep. Adam Matthews presented testimony outlining the purpose of the legislation and the role reusable healthcare textiles can play in supporting hospitals, patients and healthcare workers. Their testimony helped frame the bills as a practical policy solution that advances infection prevention, sustainability and supply chain reliability.

The bills also include safeguards around how reusable textiles are handled. Reusable products would need to be processed through certified hygienically clean facilities and used consistently with federal infection-control guidance. The legislation also accounts for real-world supply chain challenges by providing flexibility when disruptions make compliance impractical.

Along with examining the benefits of reusables, the hearings provided an important platform to highlight the role commercial laundries already play in the state, through professional processing standards, reliable service networks and local employment.

TRSA looks forward to working with lawmakers, member companies and stakeholders as both bills continue through their respective chambers.
