TRSA is excited to share some positive news for the linen, uniform and facility services industry and all New Yorkers. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, with the support of President Donald Trump (R), has taken action to revoke New York City’s congestion-pricing program. After years of effort, this is a major step forward in addressing the deeply flawed, inequitable and illegal tolling program.

In a letter to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), dated today, Secretary Duffy outlined the concerns both he and President Trump share about the congestion-pricing program. Duffy determined that the program, which was developed as part of the Value Pricing Pilot Program, was unlawfully granted to New York State.

TRSA has taken an active role in opposing the congestion-pricing scheme, partnering with the New York Trucking Association in a lawsuit to end the program. “This is one case where advocacy is a less direct path to achieve a goal,” said Joseph Ricci, president and CEO of TRSA. “We agree with the administration’s decision to halt this program, and we hope it leads to an immediate cessation of the collection of tolls. This will allow citizens and businesses of New York to ensure the economy keeps running smoothly. We hope this will put a pause on other cities across the nation who are looking at the New York model of instituting a congestion-pricing scheme of their own.”

Given this breaking news, TRSA is still waiting to see how this will play out. It is still unclear whether the federal government has the authority to revoke the program, and there is no word on whether the tolls will continue to be collected or when the program will stop collecting the tolls.
