ETSA received a positive update related to its advocacy efforts on the Ecodesign framework for industrial laundry equipment.

According to the final report prepared by the OEKO Institut under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), the specificities of commercial and industrial laundry appliances have been clearly recognized. In particular, the report acknowledges that a harmonized standard is not appropriate for the sector, as industrial machines are largely custom-built systems designed for cost efficiency and operational performance.

This conclusion directly reflects the consistent and coordinated input provided by ETSA, notably through its Machinery Task Force and its EU Affairs Manager Nelly Le Dévic, throughout the consultation process with both the European Commission and the study consultants. ETSA has continuously emphasized the customized nature of industrial laundry systems and the need to avoid a one-size-fits-all regulatory approach.

Importantly, the report also indicates that the European Commission does not intend to introduce new regulatory measures (such as a Delegated Act) or conduct further impact assessment work for this product group.

This development represents a significant achievement for the sector, ensuring that future Ecodesign requirements remain proportionate and adapted to the realities of industrial laundry operations. The outcome is expected to be formally presented at an upcoming Ecodesign Forum.
