Does top-level leadership of a workplace require traditional management skills? Or are command-and-control, direction-focused, technical-expertise-sharing techniques fading in importance to success atop the organizational chart? In a TRSA virtual roundtable slated for Thursday, July 27, linen and uniform service GMs will consider how this and other contemporary leadership trends emerging across the economy are taking hold in our industry.

Roundtable participants will share their experience and opinions on management and leadership synergy in the daily workings of linen and uniform service. General managers (GMs) will describe their strategies for hiring, coaching and training their direct reports to lead and manage.

Teams on the front line of supplying, laundering and maintaining products provided to customers require mentoring and guidance from mid-level management. To handle this and ensure their teams are productive, these managers need technical and communications skills. They must also be leaders, willing to dedicate time and energy to:

  • Support others however needed
  • Operate with a strong results orientation
  • Seek different perspectives
  • Solve problems effectively

Mid-management turns over, however, leaving GMs responsible for the next generation in these positions, including identifying candidates for promotion from within. Your plant’s next great communicator, technician and leader today could be hangering garments or feeding an ironer.

The TRSA virtual roundtable discussion, starting at 1 p.m. EDT, will highlight leaders who see their roles as service to the people they lead, making their team members’ lives easier – physically, cognitively and emotionally. Participants will recount how they knew employees had the leadership skills to move into management roles even if their technical and communications capabilities might not have been as great.

For the roundtable, register now and read McKinsey & Co.’s “What Is Leadership?” This four-page explainer, which will guide the roundtable, defines leadership as behaviors that help people align their collective direction, execute strategic plans and continually renew an organization.

TRSA virtual roundtables are free for staff of TRSA member operator and supplier partner companies.
