G&K Services Inc., Minneapolis, continues to invest in environmentally sustainable laundry processes, according to a news release issued on Earth Day, April 22.

The company now uses NPE-free wash chemistry in all its facilities and has lowered water consumption. Water reuse systems have been added to another three facilities, thus reducing fresh water use by up to 40%. Boiler heat recovery systems have been installed in over half of its laundry facilities, and the company now has also started to introduce a heat recovery process for use on dryers.

G&K notes that it’s improved fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions by installing a GPS-based telematics solution across its fleet. That system has reduced total motor fuel usage over the past 12 months, despite an increase in total miles driven. The company now has launched a pilot program to test delivery trucks fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG).

As part of its environmental stewardship, G&K has invested in an improved information system, which helps it manage its environmental obligations and compliance with regulatory requirements. It has strengthened both its environmental compliance processes and its team. Both initiatives enable G&K to better manage its environmental programs and identify opportunities for future improvements.
