Peracetic Acid: NIOSH Extends Comment Period

Posted June 9, 2017 at 1:02 pm

In response to a stakeholder’s request, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently extended the comment period on a Request for Information (RFI) on peracetic acid, according to a notice published on June 1 in the Federal Register. The new comment deadline for the RFI is Oct. 1.

Peracetic acid “is a colorless liquid with a strong, pungent acrid odor” that is used as a disinfectant, often in food processing, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. It also is used in linen, uniform and facility services plants on the healthcare side.

NIOSH, which has not yet established a recommended exposure limit for peracetic acid, is seeking information and related data on the possible health effects among workers exposed to the liquid. To review the extension in the Federal Register, click here.
