Learn More About Hygienically Clean

TRSA’s Hygienically Clean certification program continues to grow steadily, with five more plants having recently certified with this program that requires biological testing of textiles to ensure a lack of harmful microorganisms. The program also features plant inspections and documentation of best laundering practices.

“Hygienically Clean continues to gain momentum because it requires laundries to quantify their performance to demonstrate that they’ve achieved a higher standard of cleanliness,” said TRSA President and CEO Joseph Ricci. “We extend our hearty congratulations to this latest group of managers whose facilities have passed the tests and are now certified as Hygienically Clean.”

Since its introduction in 2012, interest among commercial launderers in the Hygienically Clean program has increased dramatically as a growing number of facilities have passed the program’s rigorous testing and inspection requirements. The latest group of plants to certify in September and October include:

  • AmeriPride Services Inc., Little Rock, AR
  • California Linen Service, Pasadena, CA
  • Cintas Corp., Chester, VA
  • Superior Linen  Service, Springdale, AR
  • Superior Linen Service, Tulsa, OK

The plants noted above serve various sectors of the textile services market, including food and beverage, hospitality, industrial and healthcare.

John Sutherland, senior vice president of U.S. operations for AmeriPride, Minnetonka, MN, noted that those plants that achieve the Hygienically Clean certification stand out because they’re doing more for customers.

“This milestone demonstrates our commitment to the customer through ongoing improvements to our cleaning processes,” Sutherland said. “By understanding and responding to our customer’s needs, we’ve been able to differentiate ourselves in the industry. Achieving this new healthcare designation is a big win for the branch and our customers.”

The Hygienically Clean program of biological testing and inspections of laundered reusable textiles relies on outcomes based on European and International Standards Organization (ISO) standards and best management practices.

The primary ways that Hygienically Clean certification differentiates textile services companies include:

Quantifiable – It’s the only certification program that requires goods to be tested by an independent lab to verify that they are hygienically clean, i.e., free of disease-causing microorganisms in sufficient numbers to cause illnesses.

Objectivity – It’s the only certification program that uses internationally recognized standards, independent inspections and ongoing testing as the ultimate judge of hygiene.

Continuous – It’s the only certification program that requires laundries to pass ongoing microbial testing, demanding consistent performance.

ISO Guidelines – ISO states that production processes are not reliable indicators of product quality, only product-specific testing can earn certification.

Internationally Recognized – The Hygienically Clean certification is based on established international standards that are applicable worldwide, across all textile services customer markets.
