One group of attendees who participated in TRSA’s visits with lawmakers on Capitol Hill got an opportunity to meet with a high-profile lawmaker, Utah Sen. Mitt Romney (R), who also served as the Republican candidate for president in 2012.

“The senator met for about 10 minutes with our group of Utah members, including Jim Kearns and Jay Addis of Alsco,” said TRSA Vice President of Government Relations Kevin Schwalb. Joining the Alsco Uniforms representatives was an international visitor, Juha Laurio, president and CEO of Lindstrom Oy, Helsinki, Finland.

Laurio, who also serves on TRSA’s Board of Directors, discussed the challenges of operating his company’s commercial laundry operations in Ukraine during the ongoing military conflict with Russia. Kearns, who is also vice chair of TRSA, talked about the impact on Utah and beyond of Alsco, which is based in Salt Lake City. This family-owned company, founded in 1889, currently employs 20,000 people at 180 locations in 14 countries. Alsco also serves 355,000 customers. In addition to Kearns and Addis, Alsco executives Brandon Divers, GM, Alexandria, VA; and Ryan Barry, GM, Lanham, MD, attended the meetings.

The TRSA group briefed the senator’s team on the association’s legislative priorities, including the Prevent Pandemic Act (S-3799) which would require hospitals to maintain a 50-50 mix of reusable vs. disposable personal protective equipment (PPE), such as isolation gowns.

TRSA’s 12th Annual Legislative Conference closed March 31 in Washington with nearly 80 in-person and virtual meetings with federal legislators and their staff, exhibiting members’ dedication to the association’s advocacy agenda. Click here to read more about this year’s Hill Day.
